Three Sisters Garden at the Library

Wednesday, May 23 at 4:00 PM ~ Join us in planting the Library’s own traditional garden.

The Hauseedsdenosaunee (known as the Iroquois) believe corn, beans and squash are precious gifts from the Great Spirit, each watched over by one of three sisters spirits, called the De-o-ha-ko, or Our Sustainers.  These sisters are inseparable and they only grow and thrive when they are together. This tradition of planting corn, beans and squash in the same mounds is a sophisticated, sustainable system that provided long-term soil fertility and a healthy diet to generations.

The oldest sister corn stands tall in the center mound.

Squash covers the roots of her sisters, keeping the ground moist and weed-free.

The third sister bean weaves between her sisters as she reaches to the sun.

He recently published Women in King Philip’s War.

Dighton Beyond the Book

All are invited to participate in the Library’s special Tricentennial book discussion groups. The next one is Saturday, March 24 at 1:00 PM at the Lower Level of Town Hall.

Planned in conjunction with the Dighton Intertribal Indian Council, each month will feature books that were chosen to represent a different theme connected to Dighton’s history – with special focus on Native American perspectives, culture, identity and tradition. Each month will feature specific titles for children, teens and adults, as well as a Suggested Reading List that will allow participants to explore themes in more detail.

March’s theme is the books of Edward Lodi. Edward Lodi is an author from Middleborough, who has compiled many stories from New England and King Philip’s War. He has found some of the odd, the spooky, and most recently, the little known tales of women’s roles during this violent time in New England history. Kids choices, while not Lodi’s books, are titles that reflect the time of King Philip’s War. Copies of all the books are available at the Library.
