Join Dr. Tim Walker of UMASS Dartmouth at Old Town Hall on Saturday February 17th at 3:00 as he highlights little-known stories and describes the less-understood maritime side of the Underground Railroad. Professor Walker will contextualize how escapes were managed along the East Coast of the United States, moving from the Carolinas, Virginia, and Maryland to safe harbor in northern cities such as Philadelphia, New York, New Bedford, and Boston. While stories on the Underground Railroad have focused almost exclusively on overland routes, Tim will expand our understanding of how many achieved freedom by sea and what that journey looked like for many African Americans.
